Deprecation of Soil Water Content SMAP L-band Backup v5.0 Resource
Deprecation Notice ⚠️
The resource SWC-SMAP-LBACKUP_V5.0_1000 in the soil_water_content_1000m layer was deprecated on September 1, 2026.
All running subscriptions have since been completed, and no new subscriptions can be created.
This resource provided a backup Soil Water Content estimate derived from AMSR-2 brightness temperatures when SMAP L-band data was unavailable. It has been superseded by SWC-MULTISOURCE_V1.0, which fuses multiple satellite sources.
Update the cloud_filter tool on hosting subscriptions
You can now change the
cloud_filter
All other tool changes remain unsupported on hosting subscriptions, since they could produce files incompatible with the existing data collection. As with any subscription update, the change applies only to future deliveries.
Tasking Automated Delivery: nested delivery payload and path prefix support
The Tasking API now accepts an Orders-API-shaped delivery block on order create and redelivery, with optional path_prefix support that propagates end-to-end to delivered assets. See the Automated Delivery documentation for full details.
New Features
- Configure auto-delivery on order create with a nested delivery.destination block containing a ref and an optional path_prefix, matching the Orders API shape. Use pl:destinations/default to deliver to your organization's default destination.
"delivery": {
"destination": {
"ref": "pl:destinations/my-s3-destination-CKxV9io",
"path_prefix": "planet-scenes"
}
}
- Organize delivered assets with an optional path_prefix:
- Allowed characters: letters (Unicode included), digits, and _ - . / +.
- A forward slash (/) is treated as a folder; cannot be at the start or end.
- Maximum 128 bytes (UTF-8).
- Redelivery requests to /v2/delivery-tasks/ accept the same nested delivery block. Omit it to inherit the original delivery task's destination and prefix; supply it to override either or both. Uniqueness is now enforced on the (destination, path_prefix, assets, capture) tuple, so redelivering to the same destination with a different prefix is allowed.
- DeliveryTask responses now expose pl_ref and path_prefix alongside the existing delivery_destination_id.
- The Tasking Dashboard delivery component (order entry and Deliver Again modal) now includes a "Path prefix (optional)" input. Detail views show the path prefix alongside the destination when set.
Breaking Changes
The flat auto_delivery_destination_id (on orders) and delivery_destination_id (on redelivery) fields are deprecated and will be removed in a future version. Use the nested delivery.destination.ref shape instead. Supplying both shapes with conflicting values will be rejected.
Sentinel Hub API Path Structure Update Complete
The Sentinel Hub API path structure update announced here on March 9th has been completed. A new path format /<service>/<version> is now available. We encourage you to migrate from the legacy /api/<version>/<service> format.
Affected services:
- Processing API
- Asynchronous Processing API
- Statistical API
- Batch Statistical API
- Batch Processing API
- Catalog API
- Zarr Import API
- Bring Your Own COG (BYOC) API
Impact
- Both old and new URL formats continue to work with no breaking changes.
- Response links from services now use the new path format.
- We updated documentation to reflect the new path format.
Deprecation Notice
The legacy /api/<version>/<service> format will be deprecated in the future. We recommend migrating your integrations to the new format soon.
Subscriptions API Backfill Complete Field
The Subscriptions API now includes a nullable backfill_complete timestamp.
A null value means backfill is in progress or not applicable (e.g. forwardfill subscriptions), while a timestamp marks its completion (UTC). This allows workflows to check backfill status without relying on webhook notifications.
New Subscriptions API Feature: Suspension and Reactivation
We are excited to announce support for subscription suspension and reactivation in the Subscriptions API! You can now pause and resume the delivery of subscription results, giving you greater control over your data delivery workflows.
For detailed information about how suspension and reactivation works, see the Suspension and Reactivation section in the Subscriptions API documentation.
Forest Carbon Monitoring Data Release for Q4 2025 and Announcement Changes
Planet has released a new Forest Carbon Monitoring v1.0 dataset covering September 21th, 2025 through December 20th, 2025.
Announcements 📣
Future quarterly updates to Forest Carbon Monitoring will happen on the last day of the month for each quarter, as usual. However, since these are scheduled and automated, there will no longer be a post to this changelog. The changelog will still be used for important changes or version releases to Forest Carbon Monitoring.
Destinations API supports default destinations
Customers can designate a destination as default for their organization. Administrators can designate any destination in their organization as default, and destination owners can designate destinations they have created as default. The default designation is globally available, and applies to the whole organization. An organization can have zero or one default destination at any time.
Support has been added to v3.3.0 of the Planet SDK.
Subscriptions API supports a geometry relation for catalog sources
Customers can specify a geometry relation of intersects, contains, or within in the source block for catalog subscriptions. This extends the GeometryFilter functionality from Data API into Subscriptions API. If no relation is supplied, the default of intersects is used. disjoint is not supported.
The geometry relation will now always be returned in the subscription source (for catalog subscriptions). Subscriptions created before this release will be populated with intersects as that is the historical and default behavior.
Support has been added to v3.4.0 of the Planet SDK.

Enhancing PlanetScope Imagery: Improved Signal-to-Noise Ratio and Optimized Data Efficiency
Improvements ⚙️
On July 8, 2025, Planet updated the PlanetScope imagery pipeline. The updates are designed to significantly enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for near-infrared, red-edge, yellow, and coastal blue bands by reducing noise.
Refer to the Planet Community Product Update for additional information about this improvement.
Subscriptions API Time Range Filter default changed from "published" to "acquired"
Improvements ⚙️
The default value for time_range_type in catalog subscriptions has changed from published to acquired. This means time range filters will apply to when an image was captured rather than when it was published to Planet's catalog.
The most noticeable difference between the acquired and published dates is due to the satellite commissioning process, during which newly launched satellites undergo testing, calibration, and data validation before being approved for operational use. Once commissioned, Planet retroactively publishes imagery starting from the first light image, which can result in a delay of weeks or months between acquisition and publication.
The change will only apply to newly created subscriptions. If you would like to receive images based on their published date, specify "time_range_type": "published" in the subscription request.

Brightness Temperature Fix Updates
Bug Fix 🐛
Planet fixed an issue that affects the brightness temperature values for Landsat 9 OLI-TIRS Level 1 data, specifically applied to bands 10 and 11.
Previously, the brightness temperatures were derived using the radiance multiplicative scaling factor, radiance additive scaling factor and thermal constants (K1 and K2) from Landsat 8 instead of Landsat 9. This resulted in small, but noticeable differences in the temperature values, typically by a few degrees.
More accurate brightness temperature values are visible.
Introduction of Product IDs in scenes.tiles Metadata
New Feature 🚀
Planet is introducing product identifiers (product IDs) to the scenes.tiles metadata in evalscripts. These product IDs are named after collections and offer consistent, collection-specific identifiers for each product.
Learn more about the scenes.tiles metadata.
Product ID Fields by Collection
The following fields are now available in the scenes.tiles metadata object returned during evalscript execution.
- Sentinel-1: sentinel1ProductId
- Sentinel-2: sentinel2ProductId
- Landsat ETM: landsatEtmProductId
- Landsat TM: landsatTmProductId
- Landsat MSS: landsatMssProductId
- Landsat OLI-TIRS: landsatOliTirsProductId
For collection-specific details, please refer to the updated documentation for each collection. For example, Sentinel-2 L1C Scenes Object documentation.
WFS GetFeature Changes for Sentinel-2
In the WFS GetFeature response for Sentinel-2 collections, the ID field points to the granule ID. We are updating this behavior and it will soon be replaced with the product ID to ensure alignment with the new sentinel2ProductId field.
Data API quick search updates
New Features 🚀
Filters are no longer strictly required when searching Data API with the /data/v1/quick-search endpoint.
Here is an example payload that returns recently published PSScene items:
POST /data/v1/quick-search
{
"item_types": [
"PSScene"
]
}
You can also combine your search with the geometry field to view recent scenes in your AOI:
POST /data/v1/quick-search
{
"item_types": [
"PSScene"
],
"geometry": "pl:ref/my/collection/feature"
}
For advanced searches, Data API filters are still fully supported.

Forest Carbon Monitoring Data Release for Q4 2024
Planet has released a new Forest Carbon Monitoring v1.0 dataset covering September 21th through December 21th, 2024.
Forest Carbon Diligence v1.2
This update adds time series modeling to further improve year-over-year consistency and stability for all data resources.
Improvements ⚙️
- Pixel-level time series modeling applied to Canopy Height and Canopy Cover for all years. See Time Series Modeling in the Technical Specification.
- Localized uncertainty quantification for height and cover based on the pixel-level time series model standard error.
- Aboveground Carbon Density predictions were re-estimated using the updated Canopy Height and Canopy Cover data.
- Less aggressive zero-ing of canopy height and canopy cover to improve estimates in savannah ecosystems. Previously all height and cover values were set to zero if cover was < 10%, but in v1.2 we use a lower threshold of 5% cover.
Forest Carbon Monitoring v1.0
- This is the initial public release of the Forest Carbon Monitoring product. Please see the technical specification for details.
Forest Carbon Diligence Data Release for 2023
Planet has released a new Forest Carbon Diligence v1.1 dataset for year 2023.
Forest Carbon Diligence v1.1
This Forest Carbon Diligence version update improves year-over-year consistency for the Canopy Height and Aboveground Carbon Density products in undisturbed landscapes, and fixes two known dataset bugs. The underlying models for each product remain unchanged, and these updates solely implement post-processing changes.
Bug Fixes 🐞
- Fixed a bug where single pixel lines were reporting 0 values across all metrics, running east-west along 1 degree latitude markers.
- Fixed a bug on the edges of water bodies where masked satellite observations resulted in anomalous spatial predictions. This was particularly prevalent for inland water bodies like bays or lakes.
- These bug fixes were applied to the Canopy Height and Canopy Cover data, which propagated to the Aboveground Carbon Density data.
- Day of Year no longer needs to be requested as a standalone dataset. Instead, it will be delivered with the Uncertainty and QA data assets grouped with each Diligence layer.
Improvements ⚙️
- Stricter rules were implemented to ensure consistency between Canopy Height and Canopy Cover. Locations with 0 Canopy Cover are consistently set to 0 Canopy Height.
- Year-over-year Canopy Height values were smoothed in undisturbed landscapes (areas without significant Canopy Cover change). This reduces variations introduced by satellite observation conditions—like time of year or drought status—while capturing persistent changes as a result of tree growth or sub-pixel tree loss.
- Canopy Cover predictions were not smoothed.
- Aboveground Carbon Density predictions were re-estimated using the updated Canopy Height and Canopy Cover data.
- Year-over-year variation decreased by 23.5-33.9% for Canopy Height, and decreased by 18.7-28.0% for Aboveground Carbon Density, which correspond to improved consistency over time. These were measured using the average of 10-year temporal standard deviations over a large random sample of pixels across test regions in Humid Tropical, Dry Temperate, and Humid Temperate forests.
Forest Carbon Diligence v1.0
- This is the initial public release of the Forest Carbon Diligence product. Please see the technical specification for details.
